Jamuna's poems

THE SONG

I hear the murmuring of a song
far away somewhere,
It brings back an ancient heartache,
The melody now flows through
my bones and veins
stirring a tremor in my heart,
then slowly,slowly blurs into anonymity.

WHEN I LOOK INTO THE MIRROR

The mirror I look in
the reflections I see
Climbing trees with joy,
Flying kites beneath blue sky
Against wind high,
While crimson rays of sunshine
fell on the hill and pines
the memory as sweet as nectar
lives in my heart forever.
Once adolescence left behind
the responsibilities of adulthood came by,
drowning in love and hurt
mixed with joy and pain,
now children left for their independence
it is time to reflect on my life.
Looking at the mirror
reflections I see now
my secret self exposed,
I am now the one which was within me.

  1. This poem is so beautiful and evocative of the combined beauty and sorrow of life! We feel consumed by work and chidren, and then we retire and we are left with ourself! It made me sigh!

  2. Aunty,

That's a beautiful poem from someone who has journeyed and seen the circle of life...Can't help complementing your poem with Elton John's "Circle of Life" song...

From the day we arrive on the planet
And blinking, step into the sun
There's more to see than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be done
There's far too much to take in here
More to find than can ever be found
    But the sun rolling high
    Through the sapphire sky
Keeps great and small on the endless round

    It's the Circle of Life
    And it moves us all
    Through despair and hope
    Through faith and love
    Till we find our place
    On the path unwinding
    In the Circle
    The Circle of Life

    Cheers!

  3. Jamuna: These are lovely poems. The second one is especially powerful. Your imagery is quite strong. I especially like "memory as sweet as nectar." The structure of beginning with the mirror and then returning to the mirror at the end is also excellent.

Congratulations. Thank you for sharing them with me.

By the way, your hummingbird watercolor is incredible.

  4. Thank you Jamuna. Your poems are as vivid as your prose writing. You have strong imagery. Your style is crisp and spare. I enjoyed these poems very much. I hope you'll keep up the writing. Matilda and I still look forward to your memoir.
